Why do you love the method?

“I love the novelty, curiosity, quietness, care, wide sense of attention, sensory and kinesthetic discovery, and trajectory towards bettering oneself. I love the balance of art and science and the practical application to daily life.”

About Moshe Feldenkrais

The Feldenkrais Method® was developed by Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais. Born in Russia in 1904, Feldenkrais emigrated by foot to Palestine at the age of thirteen. After earning a degree in engineering, he got his doctorate in physics at the Sorbonne in Paris. He then worked for several years with Joliot-Curie in the French nuclear research laboratory.

Feldenkrais was very physically active: he played soccer, did construction work, and practiced martial arts. He apprenticed with Kano Jigoro, the originator of judo, and in 1936 he became one of the first Europeans to earn a black belt in that form.

A chronic knee injury prompted him to apply his knowledge of physics, body mechanics, neurology to heal himself. He learned theory and psychology to gain a new understanding of human function and maturation. His investigations formulated a unique practice that combines science, movement, and self-learning as it applies to daily life. Dr. Feldenkrais wrote five books about the method, and his teaching is preserved in thousands of hours of audio and videotapes.

Trying the Feldenkrais Method for Chronic Pain (Jane Brody: New York Times, 2017)

“I had long refrained from writing about this method of countering pain because I thought it was some sort of New Age gobbledygook with no scientific basis. Boy, was I wrong!”

The Feldenkrais Method and Music (Interview with Paul Rubin)

“I look at the person as the instrument which they use to play their particular instrument. Of course, the human organism is much more complicated than any musical instrument that I know of. As obvious as this seems—and perhaps just because it is so obvious—this fact is often overlooked.”

Slowing Down to Feel (Gia Kourlas, 2021)

“In a time when it seems we have little control, having agency over our bodies — and our internal world — is a kind of power. By engaging in a somatic experience, you come to realize that these practices are not just about creating flexible bodies, but flexible minds.”

What people are saying:

“My experience with Feldenkrais was wonderful.  It has helped me reconnect with my body during a critical time of healing and recovery and aided both processes immensely. My sessions with Eve were grounding, therapeutic, and enlightening in a quiet and considered way. As an instructor and practitioner Eve has an incredibly fine tuned ability to listen and respond. She was able to discover points of tension I did not even realize I had and bring ease and function back to my joints and movement through mindful touch and instruction. I left sessions feeling lighter, looser and more aware of myself and my world.”

—DANIEL CALLAHAN, MULTIMEDIA ARTIST AND DESIGNER

“In my work of supporting social movement organizing and building community, it is important to me to be attuned to what is alive in my own body. Working with Eve through Feldenkrais lessons has increased my attention to and perception of myself — clarifying connections between mind and body. This embodied learning supports my capacity for presence and awareness.”
